A Brief History of the TOMATOSOUP Band
(Continued)

The following year Tomatosoup became an international sensation. The Band was in the Varsity Stadium stands playing at a pre-world cup soccer match between Holland and Canada. Here they stirred the hearts of the many Dutch-Canadians in the crowd who were moved to stand and cheer non-stop throughout the game. The Band's enthusiastic performance was seen by a huge television audience in Europe and was mentioned by a reporter in Toronto Star who observed that, " ... the Dutch team's supporters were impressive too. A kind of Dixieland-Kazoo band was headed by a man carrying a banner that read, inexplicably to these eyes ... TOMATOSOUP".

[The 'Soup' floats by]Over the next few years, TOMATOSOUP was regularly featured in multi-cultural and heritage festivals throughout the province including Brantford, Brampton, Ancaster, Peterborough, Kitchener and Ottawa. It was also heard by thousands of people in numerous parades in many towns and cities across Western Ontario. Members enjoyed performing at various nursing homes, Parkwood Hospital, charity fundraisers, the Children's Hospital, the Canada Games organization, the Lieutenant's Governor's New Year's Day Levee, and countless, Conventions Legions and Pubs.

Band members have may fond memories of the two extended trips outside Ontario. In 1995 as part of the commemoration of VE Day, the Band was invited to participate celebrations in Fredericton, New Brunswick. During this three-day event the Band was featured at locations throughout the city and in a large parade.

[Landmarks of the Netherlands]In the fall of 1999, TOMATOSOUP made a pilgrimage to the Netherlands where they participated in a series of concerts and band festivals. For most, this was an unforgettable experience demanding the highest levels of musicianship, stamina, endurance and patience. TOMATOSOUP bravely overcame these challenges, and this successful trip will be fondly remembered by all.

Over the last decade the band has come a long way. Members have grown as musicians and performers. The repertoire is much more demanding and varied and the standard of playing has improved significantly. In 2002 TOMATOSOUP gave over 30 performances and it has acquired and maintains an eye-catching bus for out-of-town performances. The band continues to be guided by the enthusiastic spirit of friendly fun and companionship that led to the founding of TOMATOSOUP ten years ago. It is this spirit that enables to celebrate the Band's Dutch heritage. It is this spirit that is the hallmark of the band. It is this spirit that ultimately provides a special experience not only for the band members as they engage their audiences. It is this spirit that best explains why it what they do - and why they have great fun doing it.
